The average home in the UK creates a wopping 6 tonnes of CO2 a year through burning fuel for heating, lighting and appliances - that's more than most cars will produce in a year. Yet a vast amount of this energy is wasted unnecessarily. The average household could save up to £300, and 2 tonnes of carbon a year, by doing some of the simple things below.

Call the Bristol and Somerset Energy Efficiency Advice Centre free on 0800 512 012 and ask to fill in a Home Energy Survey. They'll give you free, independent advice on how you could cut your energy use, as well as information on grants, discounts and renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar and biomass.

    Reduce, re-use, recycle, compost

You can also cut your carbon footprint by recycling – this cuts carbon by reducing the amount of energy to make and transport new materials. Composting your kitchen and garden waste also helps by reducing the amount of methane (a powerful greenhouse gas) that is released from landfill sites.
