Mill on the Brue Outdoor Activity Centre, and wedding venue near Bruton, is an award winning example of a climate friendly business.
Owners Tricia and Tony Rawlingson Plant and their son Matt, the Director of the centre, have put in place a wide range of measures to save energy and cut the centre’s carbon footprint – from rainwater-flushed toilets to recycled tyres on the roof.
“We are trying to do our bit to limit the affect we have on the environment and climate change” says Tricia. “We have cut our energy consumption right down and we only have one vehicle, which is quite something for a centre of this size. We encourage staff to walk to work and we reduce waste and recycle as much as possible”.
The Mill’s Longhouse is built entirely of sustainable locally harvested wood, was designed by Bruton architects and built by Bruton builders, keeping the miles travelled to a minimum. The building is insulated with sheep’s wool and recycled newspaper and heated entirely from geothermal energy, using heat from underground.
Apart from carrots and potatoes, the Mill grows nearly all it’s own vegetables and other food is sourced locally to reduce food miles. This year it is encouraging parents from London to send their children by train, rather than drive, offering a free escort from London to Castle Cary.
“Climate change is a complex subject,” says Tricia, “but I think people are becoming more concerned. It is important people realize there is a positive role they can play in reducing their emissions”.
