Tourism businesses go green - Full Story
img
Over 40 Somerset tourism businesses took part in two seminars about "Going Green for Profit" this October.
The events, organised by Bridgwater College in partnership with Rising to the Challenge, Sedgemoor Tourism Association and South Somerset DC raised awareness of climate change and gave local tourism businesses practical advice and tips on how adopting green measures can increase profitability, save money and attract new visitors.

There were speakers on climate change and the implications for tourism businesses, sourcing and serving local food and expert advice on how to green your business including energy and water saving, sustainable transport and renewable energy.

Those attending also had the chance to hear from speakers from the Warren Guesthouse and Mill on the Brue Outdoor Activity Centre, two local tourism business which have already adopted energy saving measures and proved that money can be saved.

Climate change has big implications for the tourism industry and businesses will need to be prepared. There will be several threats including greater risk of flooding and sea level rise, health risks, insurance issues, increased risk of damage to buildings, roads and infrastructure from extreme weather events.

There will also be some benefits for green tourism as consumers become more aware of climate change and there is an increasing demand for green tourism.
