Solar powered boats and the world’s most famous spy were on the agenda for hundreds of Somerset children when they took part in special environmental workshops in July.
Somerset County Council and Somerset Environmental Education Network teamed up for the four Big Green Days, which will played host to more than 400 children from 11 primary schools from across the county.
Consisting of exciting and engaging activities, they raised awareness of climate change as an urgent issue for Somerset, while showing that by working together we can tackle it. Somerset Waste Action Programme, the Field Studies Council and Glastonbury Abbey are also partners in the events.
The Big Green Days are being funded by Rising to the Challenge and are one of a number of initiatives and policies being pursued by the Somerset County Council to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable development that protects the natural environment.
At each event children took part in three workshops:•The Rising to the Challenge Show produced by the Big Wheel Theatre Company. This included a game show to become ‘Rulers of the World’ and a guest appearance from James Bond in his new film ‘Greenfinger’.
Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Field Studies Council looked at how the county’s wildlife could be affected by climate change.
Somerset Waste Action Programme ran a ‘Solar Energy Challenge’ in which the children made solar-powered boats by recycling packaging and a solar panel.
From September Rising to the Challenge will also be running its own climate change workshops in primary schools around the county. For more information please contact us at risingtothechallenge@somerset.gov.uk
